The correct selection of saw blade tooth count based on material thickness is crucial not only for achieving a smooth cutting surface but also for preventing tooth chipping and breakage.

Yesterday, we received a call from a customer regarding an issue with their cutting machine. The customer raised a question: multiple teeth on the aluminum alloy saw blade of the cutting machine had broken consecutively. Is this a quality issue with the saw blade itself?

It turned out that this customer recently received an order, mainly processing aluminum profiles with a wall thickness of 10mm This is considerably thicker than the materials they had processed before. Because the workers didn't have much professional knowledge about saw blades, they thought that since it was still cutting aluminum profiles, even if it was a bit thicker, slowing down the cutting speed should solve the problem. However, this wasn't the case, and the saw blade still experienced tooth breakage.

The customer was using an aluminum alloy saw blade with 120 teeth, which is clearly unsuitable for cutting thick aluminum. Cutting thick aluminum requires a specialized alloy saw blade, with commonly used tooth counts of 100T80T and 60T etc. If the wall thickness of the aluminum material being cut is very thick, such as aluminum rods or plates, the saw blade should have relatively fewer teeth to avoid jamming or sticking of the aluminum, thereby reducing the risk of tooth breakage caused by increased resistance and friction. If it is mainly used to cut thin aluminum profiles, such as window and door profiles, advertising materials, etc., with a wall thickness of 3mm or less, then the number of teeth on the aluminum saw blade should be 120 or 140 teeth, so that the cutting surface will be smoother and burr-free.

Taking a saw blade with a diameter of 400mm as an example, for cutting aluminum alloy with a thickness of 0.5~3 mm, it is recommended to use 120 T or 140T saw blades; for cutting 3 to 8mm wall thickness aluminum profiles, it is suitable to use 100T aluminum alloy saw blades; for cutting aluminum profiles with a wall thickness of 8~15mm it is suitable to use 80T aluminum alloy saw blades; and for cutting aluminum profiles with a thickness of 15~80mm or less, it is suitable to use 60T aluminum alloy saw blades. Correctly selecting the number of saw blade teeth according to the material thickness is not only related to whether the cutting surface is smooth, but also a major factor in avoiding saw blade tooth breakage.
