During a routine inspection, Ba Jun Cutting Tools keenly detected an unusual slowdown in the flow rate of the factory’s circulating drainage pipes—what appeared to be a minor change, yet it was like a tiny speck of dust caught between finely tuned gears, silently harboring a potential crisis. The technical team swiftly identified the root cause: fine metal-processing dust was quietly accumulating inside the system. If left unchecked, this buildup could lead to pipe blockages, localized water seepage, and even trigger a chain reaction of secondary dust deposition—ultimately jeopardizing the stable operation of precision machining equipment and compromising the exacting standards of product quality.
Faced with the challenge, the Production Department immediately activated the emergency response plan and established a dedicated task force composed of the Equipment Maintenance Team and the Production Dispatch Group. While ensuring smooth production operations, the team devised a scientifically designed, dual-track approach: six experienced technicians formed an urgent dredging squad to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the entire 80-meter-long pipeline network. At the same time, the backup water circulation system was promptly activated, and temporary pipelines were connected to guarantee a continuous supply of cooling water. This carefully orchestrated strategy not only prevented any disruption to production but also created a critical window of opportunity for thoroughly clearing out the blockages.
The dredging operation is truly a tough challenge. One-third of the pipelines are buried deep within equipment compartments, leaving just under 0.8 meters of working space. Technicians must dismantle the flanges and then lie down sideways to maneuver in this confined area, making their task incredibly difficult. Even more problematic, the sediment inside the pipes consists primarily of dense clumps formed by a mixture of tungsten carbide and coolant—these deposits are so hard they rank as high as 4.2 on the Mohs scale, making them extremely challenging to remove. Throughout the process, workers must also remain vigilant against the risk of metal dust explosions.
Facing complex operational conditions, the maintenance team innovatively adopted a new process that combines pneumatic breaking with vacuum suction, advancing step by step thanks to their professional explosion-proof equipment. When cleaning critical pipe sections beneath the main production line, they cleverly employed a self-made curved scraper paired with an industrial endoscope, enabling precise cleaning without damaging the pipelines and showcasing their outstanding technical expertise.
After the team’s relentless efforts, this maintenance operation successfully removed approximately 120 kilograms of sediment, restoring the pipeline flow rate back to the design standard of 2.5 m/s. Taking this opportunity, the factory simultaneously established a long-term prevention and control mechanism: installing online pipeline flow monitoring devices, upgrading the cooling fluid filtration precision to 15 microns, and implementing a quarterly preventive cleaning schedule. This successful dredging campaign not only averted a potential crisis but also paved the way for the company to build an even more robust production assurance system, showcasing the unwavering commitment to excellence that defines today’s leading manufacturing enterprises.
